Heparin remains the standard in acute care not because it is safe or sufficient, but because nothing fully synthetic has been built to give every clinician, for every patient, a precise control-without-compromise medicine. Until now.
The Unmet Need in Acute Care
Heparin dominates cardiac surgery, ECMO, dialysis, and critical care not because it is optimal, but because no synthetic, reversible alternative exists.
Of the 12 million Americans who receive heparin annually, 8.5 percent develop heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), with 18% of those patients dying from it. Heparin is also plagued by a bleeding risk and a nonlinear dose-response. Protamine, heparin's only reversal agent, adds its own risks of hypotension and hemorrhage.
Heparin is also porcine-derived, a supply chain exposure concentrated in China, and a clinical barrier for patients observing religious dietary requirements or declining animal-derived medicines.
Clinicians need a synthetic anticoagulant and matched reversal agent providing control without compromise. The current standard cannot not deliver that.
Our Approach
Helixomer is developing Hex01 and Hex02, a fully synthetic anticoagulant and reversal agent built to replace heparin and protamine in acute critical care.
Hex01 inhibits thrombin, the central driver of clot formation, while also reducing thrombin-mediated platelet activation. Hex02 neutralizes Hex01 on demand, giving clinicians precise control without compromise.
Both are 100 percent synthetic and derived from no animal source, built on our patented RNA Origami (RNAO) platform, and accessible to patients for whom animal-derived medicines are not an option.
